Early Career Mentoring Program

The transition to working independently in private practice is challenging for new graduates as well as those new to private practice. We have developed the Early Career Mentoring Program to provide targeted support to early career psychologists.

The Program consists of:

  • Induction training. Training includes induction into our service, Medicare rules and processes, billing, booking, health and safety, and risk procedures.

  • 1 : 1 Mentoring. This consists of 1 hour per month (or 30 minutes a fortnight) mentoring with one of the Clinic Directors to discuss private practice and clinical issues.

  • Early Career Group Supervision. Group supervision held monthly for psychologists new to private practice. Led by our in-house supervisor, Dr Jennifer Preston. Supervision hours can be counted towards registration if required.

  • Full Clinic meetings. Held every 6 weeks for all psychologists at MPC. Discussion of clinic admin matters, professional practice issues and peer discussion on case topics.

  • Professional Development. In-house professional development held twice per year for all psychologists at MPC. Topics decided on from discussion at clinic meetings. Past topics included:

    • Working with ADHD in Adults by Dr Tamara May;

    • Talking about sex in therapy with Dr Sarah Ashton

    • Working with suicidal clients in private practice with Dr Sharlene Benton;

    • Working with clients who disclose sexual assault with Margie Fry;

    • Identifying and Overcoming Defences in Therapy with Dr Jamie Barnier;

    • Working with relationship difficulties in individual therapy with Dr Karen Johnson.

  • Online resources. Access to MPC shared resources and clinic library, including: templates for reports and letters, text books, clinical guidelines, client information sheets and handouts etc.
